Celebrating National Bike Month 2023

We are celebrating National Bike Month in May with several events to educate and celebrate active transportation throughout the state.

As a part of BWN’s Nebraska Equity in Active Transportation (NEAT) initiative they’re launching Adult Learn-to-Ride Classes on Thursday, May 18 in Omaha. For many Nebraskans, active transportation is not a choice and is instead a necessity. The Adult Learn-to-Ride Program targets Nebraska's immigrant, refugee, and under-resourced populations through specialized resources and programming.

For National Bike to Work Day on May 19th, commuter stations will be located throughout the metro area to support bicycle commuters with breakfast, coffee, and encouragement. The commuter station locations, along with other Bike to Work Day happenings within the metro area can be found at nebiketo.work.

Encouraging more people to go places by bike is beneficial to Nebraska’s social, economic and environmental growth.

According to Cait Dumas-Hein, associate director of the Bike Walk Nebraska, “The demand for more bike-friendly events and infrastructure exists within Nebraska. When communities come together to support and highlight opportunities, like Bike to Work Day, it is a step in the right direction for making active transportation not only the enjoyable option, but the easiest option. We hope other communities around the state celebrate the day alongside us.”

Bike Walk Nebraska invites other organizations, businesses, and community members to host their own Bike to Work Day event. If you’re hosting an event for Bike to Work Week or Day, register it with this form and we'll add it to the list of happenings across the state.

For those looking for inspiration, resources are available from the League of American Bicyclists.
